Beethovenhaus Baden celebrates 200 years of Beethoven's 9th Symphony

The Beethovenhaus Baden will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in 2024.

The premiere took place as the Great Musical Academy on May 7, 1824 in the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna. The melody and lyrics of the final chorus, the ode “To Joy” by Friedrich Schiller, are world-famous. The instrumental version is also the anthem of the European Union.

Beethoven wrote parts of this symphony in Baden in the summers of 1822 and 1823. During these stays he lived on Rathausgasse in what is now the Beethovenhaus Baden.

The Beethovenhaus Baden will celebrate the anniversary from April 27, 2024 with a special exhibition, musical events, specialist lectures, special tours and school programs.

On the day of the anniversary, May 7th, there will be an open day at the Beethovenhaus Baden and a cloud of sound will float over the city.
