Beethoven in the “Kupferschmiedhaus” in Baden

Ludwig van Beethoven spent 15 summers in Baden near Vienna. He lived in numerous apartments in the spa town, in 1821, 1822 and 1823 the current Beethoven House, then the “Kupferschmiedhaus” at Rathausgasse 10. The apartment he rented on the first floor impresses today with its original colors, which were restored in 2014 was rediscovered and exposed.

Beethoven on a cure in Baden

The famous composer sought healing from his numerous ailments in the imperial spa town of Baden. A variety of exhibits and documents report on Beethoven’s stay in the spa town of Baden. As he wrote to his brother: “… it is not possible to speak with any certainty about a real improvement in my state of health, but I do believe that the power of the baths will, if not eliminate, at least suppress the evil…”.

Beethoven and the 9th Symphony

In the summer of 1823, Beethoven was intensively involved in composing his 9th Symphony. He arrived in Baden on August 17th and moved back into the premises where large parts of the fourth movement of the Ninth were created. The Beethovenhaus Baden, which many Baden residents remember as the “House of the Ninth”, has also been called the house of today’s European anthem since 1985.

This Ninth Symphony is conveyed to visitors to the Beethovenhaus in a special way: in a separate exhibition room, the fourth movement of the symphony can not only be heard, but also “seen” and “read”. n addition, the basic principles of listening to music and the phenomenon of sound can be explored in our own hearing laboratory, an experience for young and old.

In the Beethovenhaus Baden there is a fortepiano on which Ludwig van Beethoven played several times. The instrument originally stood in the house of the merchant Josef Perger (1775-1846) in Gutenbrunn, today a district of Baden, where Beethoven was a frequent guest. This instrument was made by Conrad Graf (1782 -1851), one of the most important Viennese piano makers of the Biedermeier period. The instrument was donated to the city of Baden by Magdalena Perger in 1895.

After extensive restoration, the grand piano can now be heard again at concerts.

Here is an excerpt from the Waldstein Sonata op. 53, played by Ema Gogova-Jedlicka on this fortepiano.
